Dissatisfaction with the generally literary character of courses offered by modern language departments is widespread, and modifications designed to broaden their scope by the inclusion of more thorough and explicit consideration of history and of present-day cultural and political life have become sufficiently common to excite little comment. Such developments are no doubt to be welcomed; it is abundantly clearthat many students in modern languages have in effect been ensnared by the ambiguity of 'French', 'German' and so on as subject-designations in school and university into a specialised study of literature from which they profit little. The opposite side of the coin has, however, been less frequently observed; that is, that for those whose commitment to" @default.
