- W4704703 abstract "No other group in colonial America has seen its stock fall lower in the last forty years than the great planters of eighteenth century Virginia. The traditional story is that they were easily the most successful ruling class in early American history. From humble and uncertain beginnings in the seventeenth century, America's most celebrated oligarchy, especially the greatest planters a small, cohesive and self-conscious group of around forty heavily interrelated families became dominant in almost every phase of life in the colony. They were among the wealthiest people in British America, were socially pre-eminent and intellectually respectable. Above all, they were politically successful, filling most of the offices in the colony without facing serious opposition from subordinate groups. They developed a vibrant political culture, in which they were confident enough to take on poorer whites, cowed slaves and even colonial governors who overreached their authority. The Virginia gentry were so powerful that they were willing to take on the might of the British Crown and its aristocratic leaders in one of the peak periods of British power and were successful in giving that elite a body blow which it had not suffered from any other group or nation. Moreover, they provided the new nation they had created largely themselves with its principal animating ideas and with most of its most important leaders. For well over a hundred years, from the emergence of a recognisable social and political elite after the consolidation of the plantation system in early eighteenth century until the end of the Virginia dynasty of presidents in the 1820s, the great planters of Virginia were preeminent, dazzling the rest of Americans with their wealth, their intellectual prowess and military and political acumen." @default.
