- W47442749 abstract "Nobility and royalty once chose their mates from one; sailors and navigators? Columbus was among them?have long depended on another to guide them in the paths of the sea. Farmers consult theirs still for the proper time to plant and harvest crops, and the librarian at the ready reference desk automatically reaches for hers when she needs a source of instant information on many sub jects. The almanac?that prolific, most indispensable of books, as Moses Coit Tyler called it, has been around in one form or another for a long time and played a not unimportant part in ordering the affairs of man. Probably the first almanac was a calendar of feast days and holy days. One in the British Museum dates back to Rameses II (1292-1225 B.C.), and it is not the earliest. It designates certain days as lucky or unlucky and predicts the fate of children born on those dates. In ancient nations of the East, with cloudless skies and clear, dry air, men studied the heavens without the aid of instru ments and acquired an amazing amount of knowledge of the heavenly bodies. They measured time, and divided it, and gave the divisions names. They studied the planets, and learned to predict eclipses. All this was added to the calendars of holy days and religious festivals. Then man began to associate his triumphs and disasters with the positions of the stars, and decided that they influenced affairs on earth, so the next step was to predict the future, basing the predic tions on knowledge of astronomical phenomena. The first use of the word almanac in English is found in Roger Bacon's Opus Majus, 1267, and it refers to astronomical tables." @default.
