- W47446623 abstract "Abstract Radioisotopes are often used to trace mineral nutrients in studies on ion transport in plants. They are commonly determined with G-M counters. These detectors, however, have a limited sensitivity for measuring aqueous samples. Also when solid samples are prepared, a loss of activity due to volatilization can occur. In these instances liquid scintillation counting or Cerenkov counting are indicated. Cerenkov counting appears to be preferable for high energy beta-emitters because sample preparation is simple and cheap as compared with liquid scintillation techniques. Counting efficiencies are greatly increased with wavelength shifters incorporated into the samples. Two examples may illustrate the application of Cerenkov counting to ion transport studies in plant roots. When K transport was studied, information was needed on activities of 86Rb which was used as a tracer for K and also on total contents of nonradioactive K. This was achieved by means of Cerenkov counting of 86Rb followed by K determination with atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The kinetics of Cl transport in roots was pursued by Cerenkov counting of 36Cl." @default.
