- W4746969 abstract "This report presents an overview of the clothing manufacturing industry in Hong Kong and. evaluates the major factors affecting its development. The future direction of the industry is considered. Because of the lack of statistical data and comprehensive research, much primary information has been gathered in interviews with Hong Kong suppliers and overseas buyers. Government publications form the main source material. In order to present a clearer picture of the type of company which dominates the industry, a medium sized clothing company has been studied in some detail. The report examines the history, economic environment and general development of Hong Kong. Industrial development is discussed in four stages: early history, the high growth period, the recession and the current situation. In the 1950s Hong Kong experienced a huge influx of Chinese refugees and its livelihood as an entrepot was seriously affected by the U.S.A.'s embargo on trade with China. The resulting problems were solved by industrialisation. Textile and clothing industri.es were established. As world demand for garments increased, so Hong Kong's export of clothing grew until in the 1960s the garment industry overtook textiles as the largest employer and earner. During this high growth period Hong Kong's position changed from that of an entrepot to being a highly industrialised nation. As overall production costs increased, the colony's competitiveness in the world market gradually eroded. By the late 19708 the industry was in recession, from which it was rescued by China's open door policy in 1978. China offered a massive source of inexpensive labour for Hong Kong's clothing industry and thus the colony regained its advantage. In the mid 1980s Hong Kong was replaced by Italy and then South Korea as the largest exporter of clothing. The colony was severely affected by quotas and rules of origin restricting the export of clothing. Also it was no longer a suitable place for labour intensive production. Uncertainty about what will happen to Hong Kong when it is returned to China in 1997 makes it unattractive for investors. The beneficial environment will certainly be affected. Moreover, production costs for manufacturing industries are expected to rise even more in the 19908. To combat the comparative disadvantages of production in the futu.re, Hong Kong will need to focus on high value activities and offshore production. The report concludes that quite possibly the increasing problems being faced by the clothing industry in Hong Kong, particularly in production and international trade, will force it to close down." @default.
