- W47542018 abstract "Scattering and absorption act at two levels: within the canopy when light strikes a leaf, a stem, or some other organ and within a leaf when light passes through a membrane or impinges on a chloroplast. This chapter describes the relative quantum content of red and far-red light both in the canopy of a field crop and in a leaf mesophyll, which may be a small step toward estimating the photostationary state of phytochrome in the leaves of field crops. Many different symbols are used by crop ecologists for solar irradiance, the amount of radiant energy received per unit area and per unit time. In studies of radiation climate, it is convenient to use S with appropriate subscripts. The chapter describes some symbols and nomenclature used for solar irradiance and presents an example from a large number of spectral distributions calculated by Avaste, Moldau, and Shifrin. Complex analysis is needed to describe, in detail, the changes in spectral composition that occur when sunlight filters through foliage, but for field studies of phytochrome in their current primitive stage of development, the advantages of physical precision are entirely offset by biological uncertainties.
