- W47668703 abstract "Textbooks of medicine in the 1890s referred to the saline treatment of cholera as the only example of intravenous medication, using a solution about twice the strength of Latta's but still only the equivalent of 0–67% of sodium chloride or two-thirds the tonicity of solutions now in use. In 1905, the System of Medicine by Allbutt and Rolleston stated that intravenous injection is practically only used for the introduction of large quantities of saline fluid, though ammonia has been given. During the Great War of 1914–18, experiments with artificial blood expanders were being carried out, mainly with acacia or gelatin solutions. In 1921, a really satisfactory sclerosing agent was put on the market to treat varicose veins, being a solution of quinine hydrochloride and urethane. After many years of experimentation, Uroselectan was used for intravenous urography in 1929. The year 1930 saw the start of anticoagulant therapy with the introduction of intravenous heparin for the treatment of venous thrombosis in man." @default.
