- W47672431 abstract "Some aspects of the molluscan internal defence system were studied. The fate of foreign materials, introduced into the pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis was followed. Bacteria were rapidly cleared from the haemolymph. Particles (ø < 20 run) were engulfed by (haemocyanin producing) pore cells, (ø 20 nm–8 μm) phagocytosed by amoebocytes, occurring in blood and connective tissue, and by fixed phagocytes, or (ø > 8 μm) encapsulated by amoebocytes. In vitro phagocytosis experiments showed that amoebocytes possess plasmamembrane receptors, and that serum contains opsonin. Haemocyanin might be this opsonin. It was shown that the surface of amoebocytes is covered by a polysaccharide–containing cell coat, which is affected by enzyme treatments. As a result, interactions between amoebocytes, and both con A and foreign particles diminished. In snail serum, the presence of a strong, broad spectrum agglutinin was demonstrated. No bactericidal substances were found. Prior contact between defence system and foreign material resulted in a slight increase of bacterial clearance; Titers of agglutinin were unaffected, bactericidal substances were not induced, and encapsulation reactions were unaltered." @default.
