- W47757057 abstract "In this study we investigate the occurrence of job stress and arterial hypertension and their association in the female population of the Pro-Saude Study, a longitudinal study on technical and administrative employees at a university in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.According to Robert Karasek, job stress results from the combination ofpsychological demands at work and control of the work process, with four possible experiences: low strain, active, passive, and high strain work.A scale to measure stress at work, with 11 questions, used in Sweden, and based on the model proposed by Karasek, was adapted to Portuguese, and included in a multidimensional questionnaire applied in 2001. In addition, the blood pressure of the entire study population was measured according to standardized procedures. The study tested the hypotheses that low control over the work process – alone or combined with numerous psychological demands ─ increases the odds of developing arterial hypertension.Passive types of work (low control and low demand) predominated in the study population (33%). Prevalence of arterial hypertension was 24.3%, and its distribution was heterogeneous in the various strata of the female population. The odds of developing arterial hypertension neither were associated with low control at work nor with high strain types of work (high demands and low control) and were 35% greater among women with passive work.Although the study hypotheses were not corroborated, the results allowed the identification of issues like the multiplicity of female roles and their influence on women’s health; the heterogeneity of existing occupations in an organization like a university; the need for longitudinal studies on health outcomes; the incorporation of other analytical levels in epidemiological studies in addition to the individual level; andthe identification of compensatory mechanisms used to minimize the effects of workrelated stress on blood pressure." @default.
