- W47822069 abstract "UV-visible transmission spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy was performed on normal aging lenses, nuclear, cortical and mixed cataracts immersed in saline and glycerol solutions. These experiments demonstrated that glycerol caused a marked increase in light transmission and the transparency of cortical cataracts, and a moderate improvement in the transparency of mixed cataracts. Aging normal lenses and nuclear cataracts were unaffected by glycerol treatment The fluorescence emission intensities (at 440 and 520 nm) obtained from all these lenses correlated well with values previously reported, and they were not altered by glycerol treatment. These data provide further evidence that the nuclear brown cataract is simply an accelerated aging phenomenon in which there is little if any configurational change or aggregation of lens proteins. Cortical cataracts appear to be caused by marked changes in protein aggregation and/or configuration and these can be reversed in vitro by removing water from such lenses." @default.
