- W479214983 abstract "Reports of hormonal polypeptides in various tissues of vertebrate species have burgeoned in recent years. These substances have been found not only in their classical locations, e.g. ACTH in the pituitary gland, but also in other endocrine and non-endocrine tissues, principally in the nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. The evidence for the presence of these substances in non-classical sites has rested primarily on radioimmunoassay of tissue extracts or immunocytochemistry, but recent information supports the conclusion that in many cases the hormone (or related peptide) is synthesized in the tissue rather than deposited there. Table 1 lists some types of experimental data that can be brought to bear on the question of production of polypeptides in non-pituitary tissues. With respect to the question of ACTH/β-endorphin and related peptides in the nervous system nearly all of the listed studies have been reported. While final proof of the existence of ACTH (i.e. confirmation of chemical structure) has not yet been forthcoming, the cumulative evidence for synthesis in the nervous system is now quite compelling. On the other hand, it is much less clear that ACTH and related peptides are synthesized in the gastrointestinal tract. In this report we summarize presently available evidence for ACTH/β-endorphin existence and synthesis in nervous system and gastrointestinal tract." @default.
