- W47985212 abstract "Dreams and memories! In the hearts of all immigrants these forces waged a searing civil war. The first lured them into their new homeland and its strange yet captivating ways; the second beckoned them back to their roots, to the ways of their ancestors. For many immigrants ? and particularly their children ? the war was over rather quickly. America's abundance enticed them rapidly into its pursuit. As blue collars faded to white, so too did memories, traditions, and ancestors fade ? deeper into the past. Out of reach. One Jewish mother, dis? traught that her son's success in had been purchased at the expense of his cultural heritage, described her new homeland as America the Thief. She had, within a generation, lost her son and he his past. Among those immigrants who came to the bustling new world of the United States, none have been more protective of their past, more cautious in pursuit of their dreams, or more reluctant to reject long-established custom than the Italians. In the true sense of the term, the Italians were emigrants rather than immigrants. They identified themselves, in their heart of hearts, by their homeland, not by their newly adopted country. In fact, many Italian emigrants in? tended their stay in the United States to be temporary. They dreamed of the day when they could return to their beloved Italy and bring dignity and comfort to their family. As one lovely lady put it: We have brought only our hands and our heads to ? our hearts have remained in sunny Italy.1" @default.
