- W480946 abstract "For ecologic as well as economic reasons it is necessary for paper mills in countries with a high population density to have a rather closed water system reducing fresh water demand and discharge of waste water. Closing of the water system in a paper mill results in high concentrations of dissolved inorganic and organic substances causing numerous difficulties. Organic substances in the closed water circulation system affect production and reduce product quality. The waste water requires an additional treatment to reduce colour and COD, as some of the organics are not biodegradable. This organic matter is partially neutral, partially negatively charged. The latter is more troublesome. Therefore it was expected that adsorbants with a positive surface charge would show the best performance. But the laboratory tests showed, that it is necessary to take into consideration besides the surface charge the specific surface, pore diameter distribution and surface energy to find the best adsorbants. Very good results are obtained with macroporous anion exchangers. Cellulose based ion exchangers are more economic than resins. Results of laboratory and pilot plant tests using specific adsorbants, macroporous ion exchangers and adsorber resins are presented. A tentative description of the reaction mechanisms is given. Final goal of this research and development project is: - reduction of remaining colour and COD after biological treatment of waste water of paper mills - achievement of further closure of water systems" @default.
