- W48098315 abstract "This chapter discusses the pituitary–ovarian function after discontinuation of long-term hormonal contraception. Secretion patterns of pituitary gonadotrophins and ovarian steroid hormones during combined hormonal contraception are known to be characteristically altered, reflecting the main mechanism of action, namely, the ovulation inhibition. The sudden mid-cycle surge of the luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones is completely abolished in the vast majority of the “pill-cycles”. This effect is exerted by the low dosage combination pills too. As a supposedly time-dependent action of contraceptive preparations, tonic levels of these hormones are significantly decreasing. Inversely, there is a moderate increase of prolactin levels among pill users. Because of the lack of ovulation, progesterone blood levels remain low throughout the whole “pill-cycle,” as typical for anovulatory cycles. The behavior of estrogen levels is less predictable. However, long-term pill users exhibit a more uniform pattern of consistently low endogenous serum estradiol levels. After discontinuation of taking the pill, resumption of the normal reproductive endocrine function is usually completed within 3 to 6 months." @default.
