- W48346259 abstract "In the preface, the authors indicate this book is written for veterinarians and veterinary students attracted to and interested in basic equine surgery. This 276-paged, soft-covered book provides a rapid reference to a number of common surgical procedures that equine practitioners can do either in the field or preferably, as the authors suggest, in a clinic setting. As stated, the described procedures require minimal equipment or assistance, do not enter a body cavity or joint, and typically take less than 1 h of anesthesia time. The authors point out that “this book is not intended to be the sole source of preparation or reference for the new or relatively inexperienced practitioner” but that their goal is to “provide clear, valuable information to assist in the preparation for the described procedures.” In my opinion, they have achieved this goal and, in so doing, provide a useful addition to existing textbooks. The first 5 chapters cover the basics of instrumentation, wound closure, emergency management of fractures, and field anesthesia. The remaining 40 chapters describe a variety of different surgical procedures as well as the techniques for intraosseous perfusion of the distal limb, cast application, and nerve blocks for ophthalmic procedures.Chapters on the individual surgical procedures are well laid out with the following sections: Indications, Equipment, Anatomy, Procedure, Postoperative Care, Expected Outcome, Complications, Alternative Procedures, and Comments. Each section is clear and concise, and the manual is well illustrated with drawings, photographs, and radiographs.A unique feature of this book is the accompanying DVD that contains 33 video clips. The DVD needs an active Internet connection and thus cannot be used with a laptop computer in the field. Eight of the videos cover variations of 1- and 2-handed hand ties plus anesthetic induction and recovery. The clips demonstrating hand ties are very well done and are easy to follow. Of the remaining clips, 3 demonstrate nerve blocks required for ophthalmic procedures and the rest a selection of the surgical procedures. While most of the video clips are very clear, in 1 or 2 cases either poor lighting or some hemorrhage makes it difficult to see the relevant details. Despite this, the clips do add a useful perspective to the text and the diagrams in preparing to perform the procedure. While some sections (e.g., emergency management of the fracture patient, distal limb perfusion, and cast management) do not include a video clip, the processes are well described and, with the illustrations, should enable even the inexperienced practitioner to safely carry out the procedure. The DVD also contains templates with postoperative procedures for 41 procedures described in the manual. These postoperative instructions, which can be downloaded and used either as they are or modified according to the needs of the particular case or preferences of the individual clinician, are clearly laid out and include the essential and important points for each procedure." @default.
