- W48633245 abstract "The high lipid solubility of many halogenated hydrocarbons facilitates their absorption by higher animals but may inhibit the clearance of these same compounds. Halogenated hydrocarbons which are too lipid soluble to be excreted as the parent molecule must be metabolized to more polar products prior to excretion. Therefore, the biological half-lives of these compounds are inversely proportional to the rate at which they are metabolized, and those compounds which are very slowly metabolized may be extremely persistent in the tissues of higher animals. Such compounds tend to concentrate in adipose tissue which fortunately is not a target tissue for the toxicity of halogenated hydrocarbons; however, a tissue/blood equilibrium is established which accounts for a continuous exposure of all tissues to finite concentrations of these compounds for as long as they remain concentrated in adipose tissue. This presentation is a discussion of those factors which account for the accumulation or clearance of halogenated hydrocarbons from the tissues of higher animals and how these factors may vary with animal species, level of exposure and compound." @default.
