- W486882008 abstract "Despite significant advances in our understanding of the basic pathology, pathophysiolo¬gy and morbidity risk associated with ischaemic heart disease, the management of this di¬sease remains a major medical issue. There is clearly a need for novel therapeutic agents designed to treat patients with ische¬mic heart disease. Nicorandil and other potassium channal openers are prime candidates to fill this need because of their potential cardioprotective effects. This drugs may have the potential not only to treat the symptoms of angina pectoris, but also to reduce to con-sequences of myocardial ischaemia. Research carried out in the next decade should deter-mine more clearly whether this exciting new advance will indeed be a significant clinical development. @default.
