- W48768865 abstract "The study of the diurnal and other phase variations of v.l.f. signals is of considerable importance in several fields, namely, (1) frequency and time transmission, and long range navigational aids, and (2) studies of geophysical disturbances such as magnetic storms and solar flares. This chapter discusses the experimental work describing the variations in phase of v.l.f. signals received after ionospheric reflections at small and large distances. At all distances, regular systematic variations in phase occur, when the path changes from day to night, which are closely related to solar illumination. This diurnal change in phase can be interpreted as a variation in the effective height of reflection of the ionosphere. The magnitude of the diurnal phase change is large at small distances, apparently decreases to a minimum at distances of the order of 1000 km, and thereafter increases as the length of path going from daylight to dark increases. These diurnal changes can be interpreted in terms of waveguide mode theory." @default.
