- W48828157 abstract "Neutrophilic polymorphonuclear leukocytes represent the most prevalent leukocyte in the circulation comprising approximately 70–80% of the total intravascular pool of leukocytes. The primary function of neutrophil is to engulf and destroy invading micro-organisms. The process by which it accomplishes this task is by the phagocytosis of the microbe followed by the inactivation and digestion of the infectious agent. This chapter discusses the oxidative and nonoxidative mechanisms by which neutrophils injure tissue, summarizes the evidence implicating neutrophils as mediators of gastro-intestinal injury, and presents the pharmacologic approaches that may be used to attenuate inflammatory tissue injury. Neutrophils have been implicated as important mediators of tissue injury in a variety of different models of gastrointestinal inflammation. These phagocytes release oxidants, proteases, and cationic proteins into the extracellular environment where they may interact to promote tissue injury. A number of pharmacological interventions have been used to assess the role of oxidative and nonoxidative mechanisms of tissue injury in the experimental models of gastrointestinal inflammation. Interventions can take place at various levels, such as reducing neutrophil adherence, preventing the formation of toxic metabolites and inactivating neutrophil-derived oxidants and proteases. These types of maneuvers may prove useful in the treatment of human gastrointestinal inflammation." @default.
