- W4886515 abstract "Publisher SummaryRotavirus diarrhea represents a large disease burden in all areas of the world. Rotavirus infections cause a syndrome of acute diarrhea and vomiting often associated with fever. The primary complication of rotavirus gastroenteritis is dehydration, requiring oral or intravenous fluid replacement. Rotaviruses are transmitted by the fecal-oral route, often by person to person spreading through close contact. Once ingested, rotavirus infects the epithelial cells in the small intestine, particularly the mature cells on the villus tips, and infection probably begins in the proximal small intestine, and proceeds distally. The onset of symptoms occurs 1-3 days following ingestion of the virus. Rotavirus gastroenteritis occurs most commonly among children between 6 and 24 months of age. A number of challenges lie ahead for rotavirus vaccines. Some of these challenges are generic obstacles in getting new vaccines incorporated into a country's immunization program." @default.
