- W49087896 abstract "This paper reports the results of laboratory tests performed to verify the effectiveness of carbon black in improving those properties of asphalt concrete which may influence the structural design and performance of asphalt pavements. The research included: (1) uniaxial creep tests at a wide range of temperatures to determine the influence of carbon black in reducing permanent deformation of asphalt concrete at different temperatures, especially at high temperature; (2) flexural fatigue tests on beam specimens of asphalt concrete to define the influence of carbon black on the fatigue performance of the filled asphalt mixtures; (3) structural analyses of representative pavement sections to assess the influence of carbon black reinforcement on mixture performance; and (4) determination of the tensile strength and stiffness of asphalt concrete reinforced with carbon black at low temperatures to define the influence on resistance to low temperature cracking. Test results showed that the addition of carbon black in the form of Microfil 8 in the amounts of 15% to 20% by weight of the binder reduced the influence of temperature on the physical response characteristics of the mixtures. At low temperatures, creep response remained the same as unreinforced mixtures, but at high temperatures, creep characteristics at long loading times were improved. It was concluded that if an asphalt responds as did the material used in this study to treatment with carbon black microfiller, a comparatively soft asphalt may be used to mitigate low temperature cracking yet provide improved resistance to rutting at high pavement temperatures. The study also suggests that for hot climates, the addition of carbon black microfiller to comparatively hard asphalts may be useful in reducing the rutting potential for heavily trafficked pavement sections." @default.
