- W49154945 abstract "This chapter discusses toxicologic pathology of respiratory system. The respiratory system is vulnerable to injury following airborne or hematogenous exposure to toxicants. Susceptibility to airborne toxicants is because of the extensive interface between the respiratory surface and inspired air, the large volume of air passing continuously into the lung, and the high concentration of noxious agents that can be present in the air. Susceptibility to injury via the hematogenous route is because of the extensive pulmonary capillary bed. The primary functions of the respiratory tract are gas exchange, olfaction, and protection against noxious agents. The same tissue specialization that maximizes the performance of these respiratory functions also predisposes to toxic injury. Exposure to respiratory toxicants can occur: (1) in occupational settings—such as exposure to silica, asbestos, or chronic acid fumes; (2) during medical treatment with cytostatic drugs—namely, bleomycin and cyclophosphamide—or with X-rays; (3) in self-inflicted injury—such as cigarette smoking, ingestion of paraquat, and cocaine use; and (4) during the course of everyday life—such as inhalation of common air pollutants." @default.
