- W49276684 abstract "Some teachers may be unsure of when to refer children for special help. Many have asked about what to report, how to report it clearly, and how to cut down the lag between referral and action. It is evident that teachers are aware of, and sensitive to, certain behavior patterns which have diagnostic significance. The problem is often one of organization and description, not a general lack of expertise. Sometimes teachers may hesitate to report behaviors which appear to indicate that a child is going through a phase, but many behaviors do not represent phases. Failure to report for whatever reason reduces the advantage of an early and crucial opportunity to help the child before repeated frustrations have been experienced. As an aid to teachers in this task, the following questions are suggested as guides for organizing observations. This set of guideline questions does not represent the diagnostic function, nor does it aim to make diagnosticians out of the teachers. It is suggested, rather, as an aid to teachers in their efforts to organize observations to include material which will be particularly useful to the entire assessment team. We have found that such descriptions are useful to the teachers of young children. These are descriptions of directly observable behaviors, ones that can be seen by more than one person and which are objective rather than judgmental. Communication is sharp and clear when the teacher reports and describes behaviors in terms of what she has seen instead of just applying a label. For example, reporting that a child got out of his seat an average of" @default.
