- W49394312 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the cultural–familial retardation. One basic observation that has been made many times is that children, who have a retarded parent and sibling and grow up in a socioeconomically limited environment, are more likely to exhibit retarded behavior than are children who have nonretarded parents and siblings and grow up in average socioeconomic environments. In the United States, it is estimated that there are now at least five million retardated persons who score between 50 and 75 intelligence quotient (IQ) on standardized tests. Most of these, probably, would be classified as “cultural–familial” or “undifferentiated.” For the purposes of this chapter, the population being discussed will include all those who score between 50 and 85 IQ and do not make an adequate adjustment in the culture in which they live. This chapter describes selected studies, relating to cultural–familial retardation, and suggests an approach that holds promise for predicting, preventing, and modifying the lack of appropriate behavior by the cultural–familial retardated person. The chapter describes the concepts related to descriptive research, concerning cultural–familial retardation. Nonmanipulated group comparison research and a systematic approach to cultural–familial retardation is is discussed in the chapter." @default.
