The present work represents an attempt towards the production of compacted graphite iron by making use of the in-mould technique. From the literaure survey it was noticed that the production of compacted graphite iron requires process control procedures within the foundry similar to those applied to nodular iron. For this reason the main objective of this experimental work is to study the effect of two main parameters namely the surface area to volume ratio (S/V) of the reaction chamber and the mixing ratio of the treated and non-treated melt inside the mould on the metallurgical structure and mechanical properties of the compacted graphite iron produced by melt treatment inside the mould. The results obtained from this investigation show clearly that the use of a mixture of Mg-powder and Fe Si for nodularization inside the mould results in non-homogenous casting structures. Furthermore; it is found that the surface/volume ratio of the reaction chamber is the most important factor influencing the nodularization process inside the mould It was also found that the mixing ratio of the treated and untreated melt is of less significant influence on the structure and mechanical properties of the castings as compared to the reaction chamber dimensions." @default.
