- W49832299 abstract "In its first three decades of existence, clinical immunosuppression had essentially been based on chemical drugs that inhibit various lymphocyte functions, notably proliferation and cytokine production. In the early 1960s major successes were obtained with azathioprine and corticosteroids and then, in the 1980s, with cyclosporine A which represented an important breakthrough due to its high T-cell selectivity. More recently new chemicals were proposed namely, FK506 and mycophenolic acid, but there is not strong evidence suggesting that, when compared to cyclosporine A, these drugs are more selective, less toxic (for an equal therapeutic activity) or have an increased capacity to prevent chronic rejection or to induce tolerance." @default.
