- W49965453 abstract "This chapter reviews the current status of studies in calcium metabolism in depression treated by ECT. Metabolic balance studies, urinary calcium excretion, blood and cerebrospinal fluid calcium concentrations are discussed in relation to pre, immediately post and late post-ECT measurements. Inadequate and somewhat conflicting data make a definitive conclusion impossible at this time. There is a general consensus that calcium metabolism tends to be negative during depression and moves toward a positive balance, with decreased urinary calcium, after successful treatment. Reported serum calcium changes are contradictory, with earlier results from several studies showing an immediate and transient increase in serum levels (in some reports followed by an immediate rebound decrease) with return to pretreatment values within hours. A single more recent (and apparently better controlled) study of seven cases reports an immediate post-ECT decrease in serum and cerebrospinal fluid calcium but apparently only after a few ECT and coinciding with lessening of depression. Late post-ECT values appear to return to or toward normal. All data are consistent in finding pretreatment serum and cerebrospinal fluid calcium levels within normal limits. Potential neuroendocrine and non-hormonal mechanisms which could contribute to these changes are discussed." @default.
