- W49968983 abstract "The chancellors of the kings of Navarre of the Evreux dynasty in the XIVth century were men of consequence. Combining simultaneously the role of counsellor, negotiator, diplomat and head of chancellery, some of them were the real source of influence in the policy of their princes. Despite their eminent place in the kings’entourage, and the dominant role which they played, they have never been studied. This article attemps to fill this historiographical gap, dealing exclusively with the chancellors of French origin to Philippe I of Evreux and Charle II of Navarre. These are certainly the least easy to understand, given the rarrity of either French or Navarre sources on them. Eight chancellors of French origin served successively from 1328 to 1375 They mainly lived in France until 1364, and from this date moved to Navarre. This move prompts the question of wheter there were chancellery services in the kingdom before this date, how they were organised and how they functioned, who were their heads and what were their roles. The author puts forward the idea that the setting up of the chancellery in the kingdom dates back to 1364, as the same setting up affected the Campara de comptos the following year; if this is the case, it would confirm the real political intention of Charles II to provide his Navarre kingdom with proper state institutions. The study of the geographical, social and intellectual origins of these eight chancellors also shows the common factors that unite them: they belonged to the same milieu, that of people of the church, and they all pursued a university career. They are thus characteristic of that group of intellectuals who contributed to the stately transformation of the principalities of the kingdoms of the Middle Ages. But there were also differences between them, which ilustrate the different paths of the kings of Navarre. While the chancellors of count Philippe were not from his French principality, three out of five of those of Charles II were. Although the ecclesiastical benefices of the chancellors between 1328 and 1349 extended beyond the principality, those of Charles II were concentrated within it. Whereas Philipe’s chancellors were also servants of the kings of the Valois dynasty, Charles’ served him exclusively. Prosospographical notices of these eight chancellors of French origin complete the study. PHILIPPE CHARON" @default.
