- W50377533 abstract "Tissue cultures of most gramineous species may undergo plant generation via either organogenesis or somatic embryogenesis. Callus cultures capable of somatic embryogenesis are more likely to exhibit rapid growth rates, friability, and high levels of plant regeneration than cultures capable only of organogenesis. Because of these desirable characteristics, much of the effort to produce regenerable tissue cultures of monocotyledoenous plants has been focused on the establishment of friable, embryogenic (FE) callus. FE callus is a valuable source of cells for the establishment of embryogenic suspension cultures and is currently regarded as the preferred source of target cells for genetic transformation of most cereal species. Development of FE callus in oat and the ensuing demonstration of plant regeneration via somatic embryogenesis, and of factors affecting plant regeneration were important contributions to the development of a genetic transformation system in oat (Somers et al. 1992). This chapter reviews the current status of investigations of somatic embryogenesis in oat." @default.
