- W50514501 abstract "The oilseed brassicas comprise four species, namely B. campestris, B. juncea, B. napus and B. carinata. Together they occupy over 14 million hectares with an annual production of 24.61 million metric tonnes (Anonymous 1991). This provides about 12% of the world’s edible vegetable oil supplies. These crops have wide adaptation and are grown under varied agroclimatic conditions. Both winter and spring forms of rape (B. napus) and turnip rape (B. campestris) are cultivated in Europe, while spring-grown cultivars of rape and turnip rape account for most of the rapeseed production in Canada. Winter rape is also the major oilseed crop in China, whereas Indian mustard (B. juncea) is the predominant Brassica of the Indian subcontinent. Ethiopian mustard (B. carinata) is grown mainly in Ethiopia. Considerable potential exists for extending the cultivation of Brassica oilseeds to the USA and Australia. The importance of these crops in international trade can be judged from the tremendous increases in both cultivated acreage and yield per hectare during recent years. Production almost trebled between 1971–74 and 1989–90. This can be attributed to the development and large-scale adaptation of zero erucic and low glucosinolate varieties. Quality improvement is likely to remain an important factor in the furtherance of the status of oilseed brassicas in international trade through the development of cultivars with varied fatty acid composition to suit specific nutritional and industrial needs. The toxicant-free rapeseed-mustard meal is being increasingly used for animal feeding and as a human protein supplement." @default.
