• W50558596 abstract "Research on Black family life has been subjected to intense criticism in the past several years, and a new approach has begun to emerge. The older approach is traced to the acculturation model, which had an underlying ethnocentrism that led to a negative interpretation of Black family life. Black families were seen as if they were all lower-class, they were a social problem, the pathology of illegi timacy and broken homes was widespread, females were dominant, and males had low self-esteem. These views have been challenged in three ways: (1) The myth is said to be untrue because black families are generally like those of white, (2) The patterns of black families which have been interpreted as problems are in fact solutions to problems. (3) The myths about black family life obscure the strengths of these families. Four new approaches are discussed, but only the model of internal colonialism seems to break away from the acculturation model and the ethnocentric bias. The outlines of the emerging model of internal colonialism are presented. This model is leading to a broad relativistic reinterpretation of Afro-Americans in social science literature in the United States. No longer are blacks seen as lacking any culture. Now they are Afro-Americans possessing an ethnic heritage, and also engaged in clarifying and building it. The new model of family life can only be further developed as an aspect of that clari fication of Afro-American ethnic heritage and value orientations.
