- W50611302 abstract "The study of sign language probes the intersection of the brain's control of language and of movement. We combine new techniques of three-dimensional computer graphic movement analyses with linguistic analyses to illuminate neural mechanisms controlling language and movement from a striking new perspective: Investigation of processing deficits of signers with distinct language and movement disorders. Lesions in the left but not in the right hemisphere in deaf signers are seen to produce sign language aphasias. These aphasias differentially affect phonological, morphological, and syntactic organization within a visual-gestural language. Thus it would appear that the left cerebral hemisphere in man has an innate predisposition for language, independent of language modality. Our ability to create digital records of the spatiotemporal patterns of signing allows us to investigate signing not only as linguistic behavior, but also as motor behavior. In contrast to the representational-linguistic deficits of signers with aphasia, a signer with Parkinson's disease is shown to have motor implementation deficits that markedly alter his signing. These alterations parallel the effects of Parkinson's disease on speech, and are likely due to common motor requirements for language in the two modalities. Analysis of patterns of breakdown of linguistic structure and motor control for sign language following brain damage in deaf signers is providing new input into models of brain function for language." @default.
