The interpretation of and commitment to the generalizing orientation in sociological research and the interest in formalization as theory-building strategies are important elements of a sociological self-image. There is also much sociological research, important and legitimate to the sociological enterprise on other grounds, that has surprisingly little payoff with respect to the task of developing cumulative theoretical knowledge in the sociological discipline. The distinction between the historical and generalizing orientations in research does not involve a difference in the structure of explanation or prediction. The research significance of a distinction between a generalizing and historical focus hinges on which of these formal components is of primary concern to the researcher in his task. It is often the case that the event is in some sense important or socially significant. There are problems and limitations connected with formalization as a theory-building strategy.
