- W50855973 abstract "IRAN ... ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE. (By A. Petrov. Pravda, Feb. 7, p. 5. 700 words. Condensed text:)Khomeini, leader of the national democratic and religious opposition, has announced the creation of a new regime in Iran. He has charged Bazargan with heading the provisional government, whose chief task it is to change Iran's state system to a republic. ... ... The declaration of a provisional government in Iran reflects the opposition's resolve to smash the last bastions of the previous antipopular regime, accomplish a radical renovation of the domestic political structure and bring the country's foreign policy into accord with national In fact, the word opposition is hardly an accurate term for the Shah's opponents. Today, they constitute the overwhelming majority of the nation, represent the most diverse social classes and determine in practical terms what course the country will follow. ... This movement of many millions is being opposed by S. Bakhtiar's government and the leadership, with the support of the Shah's Guards, who are devoted to the monarch, and of special troops and punitive bodies. ... These forces' resistance to the will of the overwhelming majority could scarcely continue for very long, were it for extensive and demonstrative support imperialist powers and, above all, the US. ... Brazenly interfering in Iran's affairs, the US is shuffling different versions and methods of solving the crisis, as if they were a deck of cards. Some of them are approved, others are rejected because they are not in keeping with interests. Arms, specialists and advisers are being sent to Iran in accordance with foreign plans. The CIA is using every method it knows in order to undermine, break up and denigrate the popular movement. They include the organization of military parades before journalists (there were no other spectators), the closing of airports, the incitement of provocateurs to pose as leftists, newly arrived from abroad, and the main trump card -force, bullets and grenades. It would seem that for the present Iran's intelligence services have put themselves entirely on an footing. The New York Times and other organs of the press write that, for all practical purposes, all of the army's operations are undertaken with the consent and blessing of the US, on the recommendations of specialists and instructors who have arrived the States. ... Saving a coup as a last resort, the US has shown flexibility in recent days. American officials have begun to consider an Iranian government that would be under the direct control of Khomeini, writes the Washington Post. It is assumed that it would be neither a republic nor a monarchy. The main thing is that the new regime remain pro-American or something close to it. ... But if events a different turn, if the Iranian people are content with the role assigned to them by the Washington scenarists, what then? The US prefers to dot the i,but it also makes no secret of the fact that it intends to take action. Among those on the crisis staffs that hold meetings almost continually in the US, there are hotheads who are urging that active steps be taken before the final hour strikes. Teng Hsiao-ping, who during his recent visit to the United States made recommendations to the Americans on how they should conduct their foreign policy, thought that his advice on this matter would be helpful. Echoing the hawks, he urged the US to treat the Iranian question with all seriousness and more effective measures to help achieve a settlement of the Iranian problem. ... ... Recently Americans have begun to ask the question, What is the reason for the outburst of anti-American feeling in Iran? The question is more than justified. However, in answering it, Washington politicians are looking for culprits everywhere, including even Radio Moscow-everywhere, that is, but where they should be looking: at the Pentagon, the CIA, the State Department - in short, in Washington itself. . .." @default.
