- W51008856 abstract "This chapter describes an experiment to explore the effects of nucleus raphe lesions and parachlorophenylalanine (P-CPA) on temperature regulation and day–night rhythm of body temperature in pigeons. During the experiment, the pigeons were in a small box whose temperature could be adjusted and which was exposed to natural photoperiod. Deep body temperature was recorded continuously on a pen recorder. In some cases, shivering, panting, and foot temperature were recorded. Electrolytic lesions of medullar and midbrain raphe nuclei were done by steel needles insulated except for about 4 mm at the tip. P-CPA was injected as methyl ester intraperitoneally. After recovery from anesthesia, the raphe lesioned animals maintained a nearly normal body temperature (Tb) over a wide range of ambient temperature. Both shivering and panting were observed. After raphe lesions, Tb is maintained at a nearly normal level, and both heat gain and heat loss mechanisms could be activated. This means that these nuclei probably do not play a critical role in the thermoafferent pathway." @default.
