- W51139756 abstract "Publisher Summary EGb 761 has been shown to directly scavenge many of the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, such as nitric oxide, hydroxyl, superoxide, and peroxyl radicals. Some of the protective effects of EGB 761 may thus be attributed to its direct radical scavenging activity. Regulatory effects of EGb 761 on two major cellular systems, nitric oxide metabolism and cell-adhesion processes, have also been observed. Both nitric oxide and cell-adhesion processes play critical roles in the regulation of vascular functions. EGb 761 inhibited lipopolysaccharide and IFN-y-induced nitric oxide production in the macrophage cell line. Both activity and mRNA expression of iNOS were dose dependently inhibited by EGb 761. Pretreatment of human endothelial cells with EGb 761 downregulated the phorbol ester-induced expression of ICAM-1 and actual adhesion of lymphocytes to endothelial cells. Thus, regulation of these important cell-regulatory systems by EGb 761 may be implicated in its beneficial effects in circulatory disorders." @default.
