- W5115932 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a question about family system dynamics wondering whether one would be able to catch glimpses of changes in interactions and feelings on the part of members of extended families that were presumably experiencing change. It presents a study that cover not only the members of the oldest family generation but also the family context within which they, their children, and grandchildren are embedded and it is interested in the connection among generations as it may vary with presumed shifts in behavior associated with health. The study sought to assess the relationships between family salience and affect of men and women in different generational positions. The change that the study shows is the deterioration in health of the oldest member of a three-generation lineage (the grandmother or grandfather) and certain point-in-time relationships that might be the effects of the change in question are also observed in the study. It is probably safe to say that there is a relationship between whether one reports health problems and how happy or unhappy one seems in later life. But this result is limited. Happiness is reduced, but distress or negative feelings are not increased. It appears from the data collected for the study that similarity among family members is extraneous to their thoughts and feelings. Neither sharing the same values nor differing markedly on these values enhances or reduces family ties. Events in one part of an extended family seem to affect the feelings and directions of family concern of members of three generations. The patterns of affect are different for men and women, which is consistent with their different roles vis-a-vis caretaking and kin-keeping. The focus of the research on generations presented in the chapter highlights the generational processes and family positions related to generations, perhaps more so in women than in men." @default.
