- W51375670 abstract "THE TITLE of the present essay deliberately recalls Thomas de Quincey's once famous On Murder as Considered as a Fine Art, published in Blackwoods Magazine in 1827. Conrad alludes to it passingly, and with sarcastic effect, at the opening of Poland Revisited (1915) when he recounts his learning of the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in June 1914: I don't know how far murder can ever approach the perfection of a fine art, but looked upon with the cold eye of reason it seems but a crude expedient of impatient hope or hurried despair (114). One might say something similar about the aspi rations of biography, or of the biographer, but with greater certainty. The genre disallows perfection, and, aside from publishers' gush, that once overworked word and now wholly discredited word definitive has happily been abandoned when speaking of life-writing. Older, wiser, and post-modern, we are painfully aware that no such thing can exist ? and, honesdy, never has existed. The form, even before theory got at it, is obviously too imperfect a hybrid self-consciously mingling documentary and fiction, impulses generally considered at odds with one another. Even in the hypothetical ideal situation, the materials for a life, any life, are inevitably incomplete. Were they not so, no life could ever be written, for it would exhaust both writer and reader. To think overmuch about these matters at the outset of a biograph ical project should be enough to stop any would-be biographer dead in his or her tracks. To invoke Virginia Woolf s astonishment: My God, how does one write a biography? She managed to overcome her puzzled" @default.
