- W51387705 abstract "This work is part of an extensive effort to select the best titanium alloy powder and processing method for the production of high quality aerospace components. Fatigue behavior was identified as the most critical property and was the focus of this investigation. Two powder production methods, Rotating Electrode Process (REP) and the electron beam method in which the powder is produced under vacuum (PSV), were studied. In addition to straight Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) of the powders, processing sequences included as variables were strain-energizing of the powder by passing it through a rolling mill, and various particle size fractions. The fatigue behavior of the compacted materials is discussed in terms of the basic microstructures and the contaminants present. Consideration is given to the influence of powder size on the fatigue performance. It is shown that clean powder can produce both tensile and fatigue strength levels equivalent to those observed in the same alloy produced by ingot metallurgy (IM). It is anticipated that the reported improvement in mechanical properties coupled with the inherent net shape advantages of this technology will further promote the use of titanium alloy powder metallurgy (PM) aerospace components." @default.
