- W51388823 abstract "INTRODUCTION As long ago as 1975 Dr. Philip Uri Treisman created a successful mathematics workshop program designed to improve the performance of minority students in calculus. Students enrolled in such a program, then and now, spend additional time beyond the usual class hours in problem solving activities related to the course. They work alone, and then in groups, and are encouraged to discuss their activities and to teach each other. The purpose of this article is to reveal that Treisman-style workshop programs are still alive and well in New Jersey. They continue to enable motivated students, especially in underrepresented groups, to become highly successful in college algebra, pre-calculus and calculus. The promise of higher grades to enrollees is a reality, and students are enjoying their achievements, as well as their grades. THE PROGRAM AT KEAN UNIVERSITY Since 1992, special sections of College Algebra, Pre-calculus and Calculus I have been offered every semester for students interested in developing outstanding performance in these courses. The program (in the style of Treisman-type workshops) offers motivated students opportunities to work closely with their peers to solve challenging problems related to their coursework. Minority students are especially urged to participate, but the classes are open to all students. The classes have, from the beginning, been taught only by experienced full-time faculty. Classes meet four times a week, twice to study the topics required in each course, and twice for problem solving activities. In the problem solving workshop sessions, students work together in pairs or groups. They are encouraged to discuss the problems and their solutions with each other and to give each other instruction on ways to solve the problems. The students spend part of each workshop working alone, but at least half the workshop time is devoted to collaborative learning. The instructors act as facilitators. The problems assigned are often similar to their class work, but usually are more difficult and more thought provoking. When students are invited to enroll in these special sections, they are informed that Kean University has joined prestigious colleges all over the country who are offering similar experiences to their math students the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Texas at Austin, and Rutgers University among others. They are told that students in these programs do much better in their math classes and develop greater enthusiasm to study mathematics. They are also told that the majority of students participating at Kean University earn A's or B's. To check the reliability of these promises made to potential students, a summary of the grades earned by students in the Treisman classes is presented in Table A. From 1992 to 1998 seventy-two percent of students in the Treisman Calculus I class (115 of the 159) earned A's or B's; sixty percent of the Pre-calculus students (112 of the 186); and fiftythree percent of the College Algebra students (136 of the 255) earned A's or B's. What a relief to find that we had been telling the whole truth, and nothing but the truth! This question is answered by Table B where we find that so far thirty-eight percent of students in the regular Non-workshop Calculus I classes (281 of 747) earned A's or B's (as compared to seventy-two percent in the Workshop Calculus I classes). Forty-six percent of students in the regular Pre-calculus classes (497 of 1,073) earned A's or B's (as compared to sixty percent in the Workshop Pre-calculus classes). Thirtynine percent of students in the regular College Algebra classes (739 of 1,891) earned A's or B's (as compared to fifty-three percent in the Workshop College Algebra classes). Several of the non-workshop instructors are now eager to be assigned to the workshop classes. BACKGROUND BACKGROUND The workshops are modeled after the Mathematics Workshop Program (MWP) at the University of California at Berkeley. …" @default.
