- W51521634 abstract "Gorham Phillips Stevens, Honorary Architect of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and a lifelong student of Classical Architecture, has concentrated much of his attention during the last quarter of a century on the Athenian Acropolis. His primary purpose has been to study the buildings and monuments as a whole in their inter-relation with one another, and not just in plan but three-dimensionally. A series of articles appearing in Hesperia and illustrated with his own fine drawings, was climaxed by a plaster model whose production he supervised during the occupation of Greece in the i94o's. The model, at the scale of i : 200 (about a meter and a half long), proved to be the most detailed and no doubt the most accurate reconstruction of the Acropolis which had ever been made. In 1957 the Royal Ontario Museum, thanks to a generous donation by Mr. W.C.Laidlaw of Toronto, and with the kind permission of Professor Stevens, acquired a copy of the model (three more have since been made), and it was decided to make it the central feature of a new gallery which would attempt to suggest the achievements of Classical Athens in architecture, sculpture, and public life. In order to make it more interesting and more readily understandable to the general public, Miss Sylvia Hahn, an experienced and talented artist-technician of the Museum, added a great many details to the model, including the marking of the wall-blocks of the buildings and fortifications, the tiling of the roofs, the fluting of the columns, the addition of acroteria, antefixes, doors, etc., and the indication of the rocky surface of the hill and its cliffs. The sculptural reliefs of the Erechtheion, Nike Temple and its parapet, the Parthenon Frieze and its metopes, as well as many free-standing figures, especially those mentioned by Pausanias and placed conjecturally by Mr. Stevens, have been represented; a Panathenaic Procession passing through the Propylaia also helps to break up the large empty spaces and give scale to the buildings. The final touch of realism was supplied by planting shrubs and trees, and by coloring the whole model: rocks, tile roofs, marble surfaces, sculpture, and architectural details such as triglyphs and acroteria (Pi. 32). Although in detail much is inevitably conjectural we hope that the total effect may suggest more vividly than has been possible until now the appearance of the Acropolis in the days of Plato and Demosthenes.
