- W51658315 abstract "It is known that oral and maxillofacial surgeons in collaboration with orthodontist often perform corrective dental procedures and these procedures are carried out after providing local anesthesia adjacent to the site of the lesion. As most of the minor surgical procedures in dentistry do not require general anesthesia, they are carried out with the help of local anesthesia. Local anesthesia is induced when propagation of action potential is to be inhibited from the source of stimulation, such as a tooth, to the sensory areas of the brain. Local anaesthetics work by blocking the entry of sodium ions into their channels, thereby preventing the transient increase in permeability of the nerve membrane to sodium ions for generating an action potential. When a local anaesthetic is injected into soft tissues, it exerts a pharmacological action on the blood vessels in the area. All local anesthetics possess a degree of vasoactivity which may vary depending on the selection of the drug. Development of orthodontal braces for containing the drug for local anaesthetic procedure is one of the emerging areas in biomedical engineering and our research work focuses on the development of one such tool designed for administering anaesthesia noninvasively before dental procedures. Based on the qualitative studies on the nature of the current suitable for the transfer of drug, we have developed the drug delivery system which augments with the orthodontal braces for the delivery of small doses of anaesthetic drug to the target site with the aid of pulse electrical stimulation." @default.
