- W51787607 abstract "This chapter highlights the connection amongst education, schooling, and learning. The process of education may be very broadly defined as involving changes in understanding the external world, oneself, and one's relationship to people and objects in the environment. These changes facilitate interpretation of experience and permit increasingly effective behavioral techniques for dealing with life, making it possible, to some extent, to control those elements of the environment with which one comes into contact. Education is closely connected with learning. Learning is the process through which education occurs. Education in its broadest sense is a process of self-initiated, self-directed learning. It is engaged in spontaneously and naturally, without even the necessity of conscious awareness. Education is, therefore, not synonymous with learning, especially learning of the formal kind. Schooling and learning are not same but are closed linked. School is still overwhelmingly associated with learning, even though writers in the area may disagree concerning the particular kinds of learning that should be paramount. The term education is frequently used in juxtaposition to statements about schools and school teaching. However, it can quite correctly be more broadly understood as including the full range of educative experiences people undergo in the normal course of their lives. Learning is the core of all education, both in and out of school. It includes acquisition of new social skills, development of changed attitudes toward oneself and others, changed capacity to experience and tolerate emotions, development of goals and aspirations, and so on." @default.
