- W51988890 abstract "The benefits and effects of computers and other assistive technologies to develop career awareness for four fifth-grade students with cognitive disabilities were examined. The students participated in a seven-week career awareness exercise and used the following assistive technology and multimedia tools: Hyperstudio, Intellikeys, Co-Writer, ClarisWorks, Write-Outloud, Picture It, CD-ROM software, the Internet, a Macintosh computer, a camcorder, a Quick-Take, Polaroid, digital and 35mm cameras, and a television and VCR. Observations, field notes, self-designed questionnaires and formal interviews with students (with and without disabilities), parents, teachers, and a speech therapist were used to collect data. Outcomes reported included enhanced motivation to participate in and complete assigned work, an increase in communication skills, independence, knowledge of the world of work, and self-esteem. In addition, students had fun, were recognized by others for their capabilities, and were more likely to have their learning styles and preferences addressed by their parents and school staff.
