- W52008415 abstract "The Hanford atomic reactors have been described by Smyth (1945) in a general manner. The cooling water which is pumped from the Columbia River is subjected to conventional treatment procedures and after passage through the reactor is held in retention basins before discharge (U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, 1950 and 1951). Minerals present in the water are transmuted by neutron bombardment and become radioactive. The radio-elements in the reactor cooling water are present in extremely weak dilutions when mixed with the much greater unused portion of the river's volume. No harmful influence on the characteristics of the river results from the Hanford plant operation according to the measurements taken. As a consequence of unstable isotopes present in the water, however, all life of the Columbia River becomes slightly radioactive, principally by two means. First, the simpler forms of life, essentially the algae, assimilate radioactive isotopes along with their stable counterparts. Second, invertebrates and eventually higher organisms receive contributions of radioactive materials through food chain relationships. Various phases of the limnology of the Columbia River have been under surveillance during the past few years to determine the amount of radioactivity present and assess any unbalance resulting from the operation of the production plant. In addition to the evaluation of pollutional or health hazards present, it is thought that the data will contribute to the knowledge of a major stream which is essentially unaltered by the influence of centers of population. The present report constitutes one phase of this work. More extensive data will be presented in the future." @default.
