- W52013504 abstract "When youngsters start participating, they often enjoy being part of a participation project. Acquiring and retaining youngsters on the long term, however, often provides a challenge for organizations. Since social media are increasing in importance in the society, this study has been performed to answer the question if social media are suitable means to acquire and retain youngsters to participation projects. To get a clear image of the application of social media, nineteen youngsters that have participated in group participation projects of Stichting Alexander were interviewed. The interviews show that mainly Facebook could contribute to the acquisition and retention of youngsters in projects. The majority of the interviewees is active on Facebook and expects that their peers can be reached via that medium. According to the interviewees, when acquiring youngsters using Facebook, it must be made clear that an existing organization is involved. Furthermore, it is important that youngsters are provided with clear information about the subject and contents of the project, to avoid being marked as spam.
