• W52110591 abstract "Natural abundance 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance studies on nonionic surfactants in organic solvents and as micelles in aqueous media are presented and spectral assignments given. Specifically, p, tert-octylphenylpolyoxyethylene ethers (such as Triton X-100) with a polydisperse distribution of oxyethylene chains and an n -alkyl polyoxyethylene ether of defined oxyethylene content were studied. NMR parameters were found to be similar for both the polydisperse and homogeneous surfactants. Spin-lattice relaxation times (T- 1 ) for these surfactants in CD 3 OD and CDCl 3 , suggest that in these organic solvents free tumbling of these molecules occurs with some degree of internal or segmental motions in the hydrophobic alkyl and polar polyoxyethylene chains. Upon micelle formation in aqueous media, the surfactant molecules become restricted from free tumbling. Interpretations of the relaxation times in terms of a classical micellar structure with hydrophobic alkyl chains in an interior region and oxyethylene chains in a polar palisade layer suggest that a maximal restriction of motion occurs at the hydrophobic–hydrophilic interface and progressively increasing segmental motions occur in both chains outward from the interface." @default.
