- W52112971 abstract "Numerous bridges, drainage and other civil structures have been designed to achieve a design life of 100 years in aggressive ground conditions. Site investigations for Ballina Bypass found widespread acid-sulfate soils, particularly at low lying floodplain areas. The route alignment is near a tidal creek in many places. Many drainage structures will act as irrigation channels, and will be partially submerged, permanently. Thus borehole analyses were carried out at various locations along the route to measure the sulfate content, chloride content and the acidity of the soil. Resistivity and redox potentials further confirmed aggressive soil and groundwater. Exposure classifications were established based on the bore hole analysis and were confirmed by the condition assessment of existing structures along the route. The concrete specification was based on the RTA B80 Concrete Work for Bridges specification, modified to incorporate the additional exposure classifications and durability requirements needed for the highly aggressive environment. RTA Bridge Technical Directions, other design guides and available literature were also considered when establishing the exposure classifications for selecting concrete to withstand such aggressive environments.
