- W52251185 abstract "ABSTRACT Invertebrates and micro-organisms show various kinds of interactions in arable soils. The existing relationships are known to affect the build-up and the break-down of organic material, to stabilize the population density of the species involved and to contribute to processes of soil formation. The present paper is restricted to reviewing the effects of invertebrates on pathogenic soil fungi. It describes a case study to illustrate their value for cropping sugar beet on a commercial farm. The euedaphic collembolan species Onychiurus fimatus represents one of the “man-made-pests” in conventional sugar beet cropping, which is commonly controlled by soil insecticides. A deliberate adjustment of some farming techniques has changed its status from a pest to a beneficial arthropod. In a non-inversion tillage regime the damage to crop seedlings was reduced despite a higher collembolan density. A series of both on-field and indoor experiments documented the capability of the insect to modify the composition of the soil microflora. O. fimatus showed a selective feeding behaviour with high preference for fungal pathogens e.g. Phoma betae, Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium ultimum and Aphanomyces cochlioides. Exclusion of these Collembola by applying insecticides has significantly increased the infestation of sugar beet seedlings with black leg disease. A higher seedling emergence and a higher sugar yield were achieved, when minimal tillage was used." @default.
