- W52374637 abstract "The following paper examines the primacy of irrational, pathological determinism as an explanatory reference in the social psychology of the crowd. Towards this goal, a detailed analysis is performed of the emergence and evolution of crowd psychology as an accepted social theory. Principal emphasis is placed upon the 1895 formulation of Gustave LeBon. It is suggested that the enduring influence of LeBon's crowd psychology has been fostered by the degree to which this work has been ahistorically isolated from both sociohistorical context and from LeBon's overall system of social psychology. A detailed historical analysis explores this model within the context of French social and political developments at the end of the last century, and suggests that this work owed a great deal of its initial ascendancy to the adoption of contemporary research in the psychopathology of the subconscious. A brief analysis of subsequent social theories of the crowd reveals that this irrational determinism has evolved into a largely unquestioned foundation for most theoretical approaches which have followed. The conclusion calls for a reconsideration of the automatic association of irrational determinism in the psychology of the crowd, and proposes a more objective approach to the theory of crowd psychology which would allow for both individual responsibility and collective aspirations in social interaction." @default.
